 Hello everyone. I’m David
Thomson, and I will be editing this new section on the flourishing amateur
theatre in and around Southport.
Our town is
indeed fortunate in having many and varied groups for Southport audiences
to enjoy, and excellent venues such as The Little Theatres in both
Southport and Formby, and the Southport Arts Centre.
The Southport
Dramatic Club, Sefton Theatre Company and the Formby Little Theatre
Company all produce seasons of drama, whilst musical societies performing
in Southport include The Southport Amateur Operatic Society, Birkdale
Orpheus, Hoghton Players, Ormskirk Operatic Society and Maghull Operatic
Society. Younger performers are catered for by the SDC’s Junior Section,
the Art Centre's Youth Theatre Workshop and the very successful S.O.N.G
(Southport Operatic New Generation) There is also a highly rated
Performing Arts faculty at Southport College, who put on a number of
productions for the public each year.
I hope to
bring you news from all the societies, details of forthcoming productions
and reviews of shows. I look forward to receiving your comments on shows
you may have seen, and on anything else involving amateur theatre in
Southport. Please keep coming back for all the latest news, views and
general gossip.
Just a bit
about me. I have been involved in amateur theatre here in Southport for
many years. My wife Hilary and myself are both active members of the SDC,
and we are both former Chairmen of S.O.N.G, where we remain committee
members. Hilary is a respected director, having been responsible for 4 SDC
pantomimes over the past 6 years, as well as directing straight plays, and
most recently, the Birkdale Orpheus’ very successful production of ‘Oliver’
Those who know me well know that I am not a ‘thespian’ by any means,
and my reviews will be very much from the point of view of audience
enjoyment, as opposed to subjective comments on the finer points of
dramatic excellence!
